Distillery Story
And this is a bold whiskey to fit. The award-winning heritage was there from the start, with this spirit being both an amazing example of the innovation behind the American Single Malt boom, while still being approachable for a bourbon drinker just looking to dip their toe into the category. Their mashbill of 100% malted barley contains 10% deep kiln malt for that rich and roasty profile, which still having the fruity vibrance of an ASM, and all the malt is balanced out by full maturation in heavily charred 53 gallon barrels for the caramel sweetness and tannin. The 4 year age statement also doesn’t tell the full story, as there is whiskey aged 7+ years in this blend. And we love the strength they chose to bottle it at, paying homage to their roots with the Navy Strength 114 proof (after all, you have to make sure your gunpowder will still light if you spill a dram on it!). Old Line Spirits is an incredible continuation of the storied history of the Maryland distilling tradition, a wonderful story of friendship turned into adventure. If you’re looking for more excitement, their Quarterdeck Whiskey Club is a vibrant community (their team was gracious enough to show us around on the day of one of their bottle launch days), and the Ready Room bar is an awesome hangout for locals. Cheers to the good Old Line

Epoch Reserve Maryland Straight Rye Whiskey

- Proof: 100 (50% ABV)
- Mashbill: 100% Rye (25% Malted Rye)
- Color/Appearance: Pink Gold
Fun Fact: This resurrection of authentic Maryland-made Rye, probably the oldest type of whiskey made in our country, is usually only available if you visit Baltimore Spirit’s tasting room, but they made an exception for our Blind Barrels members, so be sure to take advantage!
-

Vibrant right off the bat, fruity with notes of candied red apple, cherry cordial, strawberry fields, Red Vines™, and fruit cocktail, moving into cedar planks as it opens up
-

Rich and buttery in texture, as the fruit evolves into raspberry and pomegranate, with a pop of green rye spice notes, fresh ginger, cinnamon candy, and exotic wood (sandalwood + cedar)
-
Finish
A well-rounded finish, rich and viscous with excellent spice tingle, and notes of homemade gingerbread, red apple peel, and cherry candy
Distillery Story
This Epoch Reserve is literally the whiskey they built the distillery to make. An authentic two pot still setup, open top douglas fir fermenters, 110 barrel entry proof, and even the inclusion of 25% malted rye into their 100% rye mash bill was done with intention and attention paid to how things used to be in the era, or “epoch”, of rye whiskey in our country. As Eli puts it, “Our system was set up to create a flavorful whiskey and faithfully get it into the barrel to get the most complexity out of it. That was our inspiration and why we took a historical lens when we designed our distillery.” You can taste the respect for history here, and when they guided us through their spirits last year, this Epoch Reserve jumped out of the glass to us as adding something unique and delicious to the category of American Rye. The heaviness of the spirit off the still sticks with you, with exotic wood and a delicious balance of spice and sweet fruit notes. This truly is, as Max says, “a returning of something that had been gone for a long time, a new moment of time bringing Rye back to the forefront of American whiskey culture.” And they’re not done yet! Their next era is both enterprising and revolutionary, with a new location planned that will allow them to seriously explore the interaction of distilling and food culture in a way that is modeled after European traditions. In conjunction with that, they are pulling back their distribution to only sell their whiskey on site at their tasting room, to provide the best possible experience and become a destination for their guests to see the identity, terroir, and culture around Maryland Rye. We’re grateful they allowed us to provide this Epoch Reserve to our members, so take advantage of having the full bottles available, as this is the last you’ll be able to get outside of visiting them (which we strongly encourage you to do, of course)!

Fiddler Cask Strength Toasted Rye

- Proof: 121.8 (60.9% ABV)
- Mashbill: 51% Rye, 45% Corn, 4% Malted Barley

Really warming and oily texture, with toasted oak, butterscotch, freshly grated nutmeg, ripe pears, excellent spice tingle, and pain au chocolat (chocolate croissant)
-
Finish
A welcoming whiskey you’ll want to sit with awhile, a balance of spice and freshness (hibiscus?) lingers, leaving you with notes of almond paste, rich caramel, oak tannin, and dark chocolate
Distillery Story
This sample is from their sourcing side, which they have creatively named their “Fiddler” line. Not only does this come from how they use their talents and palates to adjust the flavors of the spirit (as Whit says, “We like to fiddle with the whiskey and try to make it better than what it was”), but also because Justin, their Master Distiller, is a dedicated old-time Fiddler who is frequently playing all around the distillery! This Fiddler Toasted Rye bottling truly demonstrates how well their process works, taking this high-corn Rye mashbill and finishing it for a long 2 years in a toasted cask, boosting the thickness and sweetness in a major way. Christian says that this whiskey’s texture and finish really grab him, with an incredibly oily and toasty profile. Whit calls this “a bourbon drinker’s Rye”, and says it’s his favorite to blind taste people on, as they are frequently fooled into thinking it’s a Bourbon! (Sorry if you were tricked.) We strongly encourage you to visit next time you’re in Atlanta, as their portfolio of spirits is wide-ranging, delicious, and deserves time to explore. Cheers to ASW, and all the “fiddling” that happens to make the best whiskey possible!

Distillery Story
This Corsets, Whips, and Whiskey bottling might seem oddly named, but don’t worry, there’s nothing weird here, just another tribute to their history! Their original Three Oaks facility started off as a manufacturing plant for corsets and buggy-whips, utilizing turkey “featherbones” to replace the standard whalebone. As Bill says, “We fell in love with the building, the history here in Three Oaks, the Featherbone Factory, and really Corsets, Whips, and Whiskey, our most awarded whiskey, is really just telling that story of the building, with the whiskey being the next thing in line.” This incredible whiskey matches the unique history, smashing any preconceptions about what a 100% Wheat Whiskey could be. This bottle took home back-to-back Whiskey of the Year honors in Fred Minnick’s ASCOT Awards, with Fred saying it was one of the best whiskeys he had ever tasted after his first live taste on his show, shining a spotlight on all the incredible innovation happening around the country in craft whiskey. This custom blend exclusively available to our members contains the oldest remaining stock they have on hand (as you can imagine, they were quick to sell out once word got around), for which we are so grateful to the Journeyman team. We can’t wait to visit them and experience “whiskey hospitality”, which Bill defines as, “that co-mingling of the actual manufacturing and distilling process, but also the hospitality component that we bring at both locations.” Plus, we’ve heard they have a 30,000 square foot putting green called Welter’s Folly, so there’s something for everyone! Cheers to the Journeyman innovation, fantastic whiskey, and incredible memories yet to come.
