-
Finish
A very balanced finish, with baking spice, good wood sugars, graham crackers, and roasted marshmallow sticking around
Distillery Story
This Tennessee Whiskey is incredible, and a true testament to the fact that you should never assume a flavor profile for any type of whiskey! This whiskey is complex and unique, with the Lincoln-County process providing the perfect roundness to the back end of the palate. The LC process is the trademark of TN Whiskey, entailing filtration through a bed of sugar-maple charcoal, which Leiper’s Fork gets from a local millhouse and chars on site. They add in rye to replace the wheat in their bourbon mashbill, providing the bold spice kick that shines through on the palate and finish. It’s clear they make their whiskey from a place of passion, keeping the consumer in mind with every drop they distill. As their Sales Manager, Ben Hobbs, says, “We all love whiskey because every glass has a story where everyone can get together around one common thing and enjoy it, and the one common denominator is you all like whiskey and enjoy what you’re drinking.” That pretty much perfectly sums up the Blind Barrels experience, and we know our community will love this dram!

Ponfeigh Westsylvania Cask Strength Rye
- Distillery: Ponfeigh Distillery - Somerset, PA
- Proof: 121.6 (60.8% ABV)
- Age: 5 years old
- Mashbill: 95% Monongahela Rye, 5% Malted Barley
- Color/Appearance: Red Caramel
Fun Fact: Our second foray into old-school PA Rye, this Monongahela Rye is a throw back to one of the oldest styles of whiskey made in our country, reclaiming their regional heritage with a delicious and exclusive batch for our Blind Barrels community.
-
Aroma
Tons of fruits and spices immediately, with perfectly ripe plum skins, rosemary, cardamom, licorice, and cinnamon sugar on buttered sourdough
-
Taste
Very rich and oily mouthfeel, makes your mouth water with notes of dark cherries and dates, real maple syrup, excellent oak spice, hot honey, white pepper, and vanilla syrup
-
Finish
A complex and long finish, cinnamon and plums continue, with late developing notes of banana and clove-studded pear
Distillery Story
This authentic backstory is matched by their incredible whiskey. This isn’t just any Rye, but a throwback to the oldest style of whiskey made in America, taking advantage of the terroir of the strains of grain grown in the Monongahela Valley that are so taxed by the thin and rocky soil that the flavor produced is full of incredible depth and sweetness. Although it’s a recognizable 95/5 mashbill, this is not the stuff coming from Indiana, but is a liquid with rich fruits, an amazing mouthfeel, and insane oils in the glass. As Master Distiller Brendon Rawlings says, “In your blend there’s a big fruit note that I think is really unique to our Rye. And then the finish is super long, you’ll walk away and 10 minutes later you’ll say, oh wow.” We think that Ponfeigh is doing an incredible job reclaiming the lost heritage of Pennsylvania whiskey making and preaching the gospel of Rye, and we know our Blind Barrels members will appreciate seeing what Maximilian calls “the whiskey variety that is the spice of life!”

Hard Truth Sweet Mash Rye Barrel Strength
- Distillery: Hard Truth Distilling Co. - Nashville, IN
- Proof: 120.2 (60.1% ABV)
- Age: 5 years old (blend of 4-6 years)
- Mashbill: 94% Rye, 6% Malted Barley
- Color/Appearance: Mahogany
Fun Fact: Hard Truth utilizes the Sweet Mash process for their whiskeys, starting from scratch with every new mashing process! This requires a lot of attention to detail to remain consistent, but adds a ton of complexity and richness to their whiskey right off the still, allowing them to keep more flavor from their grain and maximize the wood sugars they get in the aging process.
-
Aroma
Swirling notes of candy and orchard fruit envelop you, moving into freshly grated nutmeg, citrus punch, mocha, mild ginger, and cherry cordial
-
Taste
The walk through the orchard continues, with candied apples, sweet mint, peach pie, candy corn, English Toffee (brown sugar), and pipe tobacco
-
Finish
A rich and lingering finish, with excellent oak spice (Christmas vibes!), toasted sugars, black pepper, and dark chocolate
Distillery Story
This Rye immediately grabbed our attention, in large part because it’s so different from many similar products from their region! While the 94/6 mash bill is a bit of a tongue in cheek reference to their neighbors, there’s no way you’d mistake this whiskey for anyone else’s. As a legitimate grain-to-glass distillery (they established their connection with their local farmer before they even broke ground on the distillery), there are no secrets with the Hard Truth team, as they know that their whiskey is truly a representation of their specific place that can’t be recreated (did someone say “terroir”??). The Sweet Mash Rye is inviting up front, and delivers with fruit sweetness, Christmas spice, and wood sugars shining throughout. As with Sample B, it’s truly one of the most oily whiskeys we’ve ever had in the glass (a great indicator of flavor), stemming from their prudent use of the dephlegmator in their still (don’t get Seabass started). The Hard Truth team says they have as good a chance as anyone to be the next Heritage American Whiskey Brand, and after you’ve tasted this custom Small Batch they put together exclusively for our members, we know that you’ll all agree!

Pinhook True Small Batch Blind Barrels Blend

- Proof: 115 (57.5% ABV)
- Age: 6 years old
- Mashbill: 75% Corn, 15% Rye, 10% Malted Barley
- Color/Appearance: Rich Brown Amber
Fun Fact: Pinhook is a blending house focused on releasing whiskey with a “vintage”, similar to wine-making. We custom-blended this for our community with their founder, Sean Josephs, and it’s the first double barrel batch that they’ve ever released!
-
Aroma
A complex nose pulls you in, rich wood and brown sugar predominate, leading into strawberries and cream on shortbread, caramelized peaches, cherry cordial, marzipan, and walnut brittle - overall a balanced sweet and spicy nose that makes you want to sit with it awhile
-
Taste
Approachable with great structure, pretty much the perfect classic bourbon profile on the palate, starting with a dark cherry black forest cake burst, leading into a pleasant cinnamon astringency, roasted pecans and almonds, blackberries dusted with powdered sugar - like you’re tasting a rickhouse
-
Finish
The insane mouthfeel sticks around for ages, with notes of dense fruit cake, cherry and strawberry pie, and a never-ending oaky baking spice tingle - this old school bourbon is the cozy blanket in front of a fire
Distillery Story
And this bottle is something incredibly unique. Our Blind Barrels team was lucky enough to travel out to put this three barrel blend together with Josephs, getting a hands-on experience with how he works to make every batch “a harmonious combination of elements”. We weren’t just trying to hit a specific taste profile, but working to make the most complex, balanced, melodious set of components from the many samples we had. Tucked away in a cool bar in New Orleans, we got to practice whiskey mindfulness in a new and exciting way, seeing how the 3 casks we chose become a journey of flavors in complex harmony across the nose, palate, and finish, a beautifully integrated whole with amazing texture and depth. Part of that complexity comes from their innovative approach to aging these barrels, with the whiskey spending 3 years each in new Char #4 casks, for the 6 year age statement. This is the first Double Barrel bottling they’ve ever done as a part of their True Small Batch program, and we know that it will be a runaway Derby winner with our community. We know you Blind Barrelers will appreciate all the thought and effort that goes into making this whiskey special, and you have to keep an eye on what Pinhook is doing with their Vertical Series, as well! After all, Sean says, “I’m just a big believer that the best bourbon hasn’t been made yet.”
