Distillery Story: Established in 2012, Black Button Distilling was Rochester’s first grain-to-glass distillery since Prohibition. As a New York State farm distiller, they use only the finest corn, wheat, rye and malted barley — each sourced just a short drive from the distillery. And they don’t just call themselves a farm distillery; they get their hands dirty to earn that name. In 2018 Black Button purchased a farm, not only to start producing juniper and other botanicals for their gin, but to grow the oak to make their own barrels. To accomplish this, they will be using the beautiful white oaks already on the property, as well as planting new saplings. From wood, to grain, to your glass, this bourbon is Black Button.

Our Take: The Kings County Distillery is New York City's premier craft distillery and among the most acclaimed small distilleries in the United States. Focused exclusively on whiskies, Kings County has made a name of its bourbon, moonshine, and other creative whiskeys. This Straight Bourbon Whiskey is made from New York corn and malted barley and is generally aged for two summers in a variety of barrel sizes, from 5 gallon to 53 gallon. Smooth, spicy, and complex, this bourbon is a precocious whiskey, surprisingly robust for its young age.

Distillery Story: King County Distillery is New York City's oldest operating whiskey distillery, first since Prohibition. Founded in 2010, Kings County produces high quality spirits out of the 118-year-old Paymaster Building in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. They use New York grain and traditional distilling equipment to make robust and distinctive spirits. "Our whiskey is idiosyncratic; its taste reflects our values. The OYO (pronounced "oh-why-oh") Wheat Whiskey is aged for 3 years in lightly toasted American white oak barrels, where it develops hints of vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon. The mature wheat whiskey is then transferred to sun-drenched Oloroso Sherry cask for 24 months to bring forward the deep, rich flavors of chocolate, black cherries, and raisins.

Our Take: Not every distillery in the craft whiskey industry is breaking new ground and growing fast, but 291 has been doing just that since their inception in 2011. This barrel proof rye's palate is viscous, with the clove, toffee, tobacco, and toasted oak at the forefront. There is a warming black pepper note, with the return of the caramel for the long, pleasant finish. This is an assertive and spice forward rye, and yet somehow, at the same time, a soft and sweet rye.
