Bobby Says: This is New Riff doing what New Riff does best: taking something already unusual and pushing it another step. They start with a 100% malted rye whiskey aged at least six years, then finish it in a combination of Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks before bottling it uncut at 117.3 proof with no chill filtration. New Riff actually describes this whiskey as a malt whiskey first and a rye second, and that makes the sherry finish a perfect fit. New Riff Distilling
You get dark fruit, buttery sherry oak, vanilla and walnut up front, followed by that spicy rye character, rich malt and a big burst of clove and wood spice on the finish. Add a little water and the sherry gets louder. Drink it straight and the rye punches harder. Either way, this is one of those bottles that makes you wonder why more people aren't putting malted rye into sherry barrels.
117.3 proof. 100% malted rye. Sherry barrels. This thing is a flavor bomb.
